Survey Results: People's Habit of Listening to Music and Understanding How They Pick The Music They Listen to

As part of our Research and Development subject, we are asked to pick a topic of our choosing to do a report on. I chose the topic of  Music & Emotions , and the idea is to learn and understand more about how music relates to people's emotions, how it affects people when listening to them, and what happens after they listen to them. But reading other people's findings and papers is not enough. I have to do some primary research. One of the things I did is a survey. Specifically, a survey to understand people's habit of listening to music and understanding how they pick the music they listen to. I then divide the questions into two parts. The first part of the survey is to understand my demographics; their sex, their age, if they have any hearing disabilities and their musical knowledge. And the second is to determine the participants' personal preference/habit when listening to music; such as how many hours do they spend listening to music, on what occasions do ...

What is Music Therapy? (pt. 1)

Have you ever feel really tired and depressed after a hard day of work and you just want to go home, when your phone's Bluetooth connects with your car and your favorite song starts to play, and you suddenly you feel as though your mood has been lifted and you become less tired or let's face it, downright sad. At this point, we can all attest to the power of music. Did you know that music therapy is itself an evidence-based therapy? Music Therapy is defined as 'an interpersonal process in which the therapist uses music and all of its facets to help patients to improve, restore or maintain health' (Maratos, Gold, Wang & Crawford, 2008) and later was given an alternative definition as 'a systematic process of intervention wherein the therapist helps the client to promote health, using musical experiences and the relationships that develop through them as dynamic forces of change' (Gerestegger, Elefant, Mössler & Gold, 2014). Not to be c...

Music: What does it do to our brain?

Have you ever notice the feeling when you're listening to a certain song, your emotions might change according to that? When you're listening to a sad song , you might feel that your mood becomes slower and sadder, and you felt as if your life is from a music video. Or when you're listening to a happy song , you started to feel that you want to tap your feet, sing along, dance around, or even join a flash mob? Music is really powerful in that sense it can alter a person's emotions just by listening to a certain type of music. A video by neuroscientist and musician, Alan Harvey, sharing his believes and studies in an interactive storytelling narrative in his TEDxPerth talk youtube video. A part of the video which really stood out to me; and I even used it as a study case presentation in my class, was the part where he showed the audience how different type of music with the same shark video clip, can change how a person perceives said clip. Going into the video,...

From Singapore To Singaporean

The 10th of July, 2019, is when I first heard about The Singapore Bicentennial Experience , attending Mr. Gene Tan's; the creative director of the Bicentennial, seminar, as he talks about his story on how this project was born. He explained that this project is so big that it took him about 5 years from the first time he started planning the project until how you see it today. He also said that one of the most important keys of his research is to read a lot of books about Singapore's history from local and global historians to accurately develop the narrative of the showcase and look for other installation as an inspiration/reference. He jokingly said to be successful is to copy other people's work that is already successful and make it better. After listening to the seminar without having any clue on what even is The Singapore Bicentennial Experience   and what to expect, I heard that our class managed to snatch several tickets for the 23rd, and we were very lucky to ...

Customising a font based on your own voice?

Yes, you read it right. I was browsing Behance a few days ago and stumbled upon this gem of a project by Ogilvy New York called TypeVoice . What it does is basically it allow users to create their own typeface using their own voice. "Because we use different parameters, you get a number of results when you interact with our experience. Yell, laugh, and whistle into TypeVoice and you'll find yourself surprised." Ogilvy New York's creative director, Chris Rowson told Co.Create. This project was made to celebrate The Webby Awards People's 20th anniversary (which is in the year 2016). The Webbys Awards is  the leading international  award honoring  excellence on the Internet, which includes Websites, Advertising & Media, Online Film & Video, Mobile Sites & Apps and Social. that is presented by The International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences (consisting of over two thousand industry experts and technology innovators).  ...
