Art x Tech Canada @ SG Seminar

On the 22nd of September, 2019, Art x Tech Canada did a seminar in Singapore's The Arts House.
The seminar was free, and our class went there to listen to experts from Canada talk about the art world meets digital technology.

The event took quite some time. It started at 2pm, followed by opening remarks and a keynote address about the whole event by Dr. Sara Diamond, president and vice-chancellor of Ontario College of Art and Design University (OCAD University). Then before the actual seminar starts, we all had a coffee break together.

The first part of the seminar took about an hour, followed by a rapid question and answer for the rest 20 minutes. It was about 'Creating a Digital Arts Ecosystem', and the speakers (Roch Michel – Media Creative Director of GSM Project, Henry Faber – President of the Toronto Media Arts Centre Boards, Kezia Toh – Senior Manager of DigiMuse from National Heritage Board Singapore, and Eric Lefebvre – Director of Development of Partenariat du Quartier des Spectacles) mentioned several important keys about how to build / pick the right ecosystem for the digital arts.

The power of storytelling is one of the factors to have a thriving art ecosystem. They also said that the budget of clients for different projects plays a factor as well, how the team and executors adapt to the process and the community of a specific ecosystem and how the artists and team should also always listen and understand the clients and compromise with each other.

The second part of the seminar addresses the topic of 'Designing Digital Arts Experiences.'. Spoken by amazing speakers such as: Jerome De Baecque – Singapore Office Director of Moment Factory, Michael Jacques – President of Le Consortium Jack World Inc. (although he stopped his speak mid-way due to him not feeling well), Ludovic Langlois-Therien – Business Development Manager of 4U2C Cirque du Soleil Entertainment Group, Felix Marzell – CEO of DIX au carre, and Alex Mayhew – Co-founder of Impossible Things.

And based on their talk, my take away on the topic is that to design digital arts nowadays needs to balance some factors, such as isolation factor, which although people are more connected than ever with each other, yet we are isolated for always being on our gadgets instead of talking in real life. A question was also submitted during the QnA session about how to handle the setbacks when doing such projects, and they collectively agree that having excellent communication and being on the same wavelength between the teammates would really help the project to go smoothly. They also said that there is no right way of doing a project. It would always be imperfect, and you would still notice a lot of mistakes, and that's okay. Because the errors are the things that will allow you to learn to be better.

TouchDesigner Experiment: Inserting OSC data with OSCIn

From one of my last experiment , I tried to change the data input. Instead of using audio, I replaced it with OSC data from my Muse headset. To connect your OSC device to TouchDesigner, make sure that the IP address and port number is the same so the data transfer can be accurate. In this case, I use a third-party app called Mind Monitor (available on iOS devices) to connect my Muse headset to the TouchDesigner software. Below are screenshots and videos from my experiment. You can see that the brainwave data is already recorded in real-time in the software. Then I used the alpha, beta, and theta brainwave to change the movement of the visuals (the chosen brainwave data I used are just placeholders for now to see the movement). Then the data is connected with 'noise', which is like the fluid/abstract visuals you see on the background. I also set the colors to be moving/changing over time.

TouchDesigner Experiment: Audio Reactive Particle Cloud

My second experiment with TouchDesigner is creating this audio-reactive particle visual by following Bileam Tschepe 's tutorial on Youtube. Again, I just followed his tutorial step by step. This tutorial is a little different because it uses both audio and visuals. The visual follows the music in real-time. Other than audio, we are also introduced with the element 'Math' to add the channels of the audio together. This is the end product. Music is FriendsV2 by Muskatt.

Arduino Experiments (pt. 1)

Earlier this week, I bought my first Arduino Kit . Since this is week 6 of term, our lecturer has asked us to display an experiment by week 7. It could be any type of experiment, and it doesn't even have to be related to our project. The reason why I picked to try on Arduino is that I think it's the closest medium I'll be using for my actual work. But I was kind of worried about this, mainly it is because I've never used or tried it before. I've only heard about it but never actually played around with it. So this is the kit I bought. It costs SGD 70 at one of the shops in Sim Lim Tower. It contains a lot of items to try out experiments. It also includes several tutorial cards that can be successfully running with the items provided in the kit. For more detailed tutorials and the codes of each project, we are asked to go to their website and search for the complete step by step tutorials. Thus far, I have tried several projects, and for ...
